We visited Sakamoto Co., Ltd., a wood processing company, and spoke with the president, Mr. Sakamoto. He told us about the characteristics of cedar, how it is processed, and the various forms it takes as finished products. Because cedar is light and soft, it is easy to work with, allowing it to be transformed into a wide range of products, from small items like ballpoint pens to large pieces of furniture.

However, the term "cedar" actually covers several different varieties, each with its own distinct properties. Determining the optimal processing method for each type is necessary, making the processing of cedar a complex task that is far from straightforward.

We also had the chance to observe the actual processing work. I was overwhelmed by the sight of huge cedar logs being sliced up one after another. Realizing that the wooden tools and furniture we use so casually in our daily lives are born through such a careful process gave me a newfound sense of appreciation and attachment to each of these objects.
